I am having trouble collecting money from a collection agency.Brooks Newman and Stone out of ft. lauderdale Florida. Has anyone else had the same problem with them.

As a part 2 to my response, I see that others have posted about this company also but their BBB report doesn't reflect many complaints, so I didn't catch it. In addition, they're having the same type of problems you are. Please check out this thread:

A BBB colleage makes a good point in another thread stating the following:
You don't say how much they owe you, but unless it's a substantial sum of money, it probably wouldn't be practical to file a lawsuit. The problem is you'd have to sue in Florida because that's where they're domiciled and that's where there assets, if any, are located.
My suggestion would be to make a pest of yourself by calling frequently and trying to speak to someone in authority. If this doesn't work, send letters with increasingly stronger demands. Hopefully this will produce some results, but keep in mind that if they stonewall you, as a practical matter, you may be without a remedy.
Hope this helps. Good luck.

As a part 2 to my response, I dug a little deeper and noticed there were other threads about this company posted already. It seems the consumers are having the same kind of problem you are and I think you should check this one out:

Also, a BBB colleage posted the following, which you should find useful:
