I strongly recommend that you do not hire this company. We hired Coastal Builders to do an industrial job. The cost was about 150,000.00. Coastal Builders gave us a time line of about 10 weeks to complete the job. After 10 weeks, the job was not even close to being completed. Coastal Builders then installed the main gate in the wrong place (remember measure twice and cut once?) Then the parking lot was painted wrong. The work failed inspections. The gate had to be torn out and reinstalled creating further delays. The parking lot was so damaged that it had to be re-poured. And of course, Coastal Builders tried to make us pay for the re-work. Can you believe it!? Then in October, 4 months after the project started, Doug Risk (the owner of Coastal Builders) left the state to take a job in Texas. That's right- he takes another job out of state. Now mind you, Coastal Builders is a one or two man company. All the while the job was getting further behind. To add insult to injury, he tries to pretend he is in California. He would handle calls while working in Texas acting like he is right around the corner. Due to the excessive delays on the job, I demanded a meeting with Coastal Builders to go over the job issues. Doug Risk tells me he can't make the meeting because he took another job in Texas doing claims adjustments. Next, we learned that Coastal Builders was not paying the subcontractors on the job. I learned as the owner, I am responsible to make sure the general contractor pays the subs. Upon request, Coastal Builders provided me lien releases. Then, when I call the companies to verify payments, they tell me Coastal Builders owes them monies and one company even revoked the lien release due to non-payment. Coastal Builder provided me a lien release they knew was unpaid. Unbelievable! One of the main subcontractors Coastal Builders hired was threatening to walk off the job. So, I had to run around and pay the subcontractors directly or by 2-party check to keep the job moving. Finally, the final straw came when Coastal Builders refused to provide us updated lien releases for money paid to date. When this occurred, we took over the job, paid the subs direct and cut Coastal Builders out of the rest of the job. Overall, the job was full of items installed incorrectly, improperly or just plain wrong. Coastal Builders missed too many commitments to even bother listing here. The final permits were not closed with the city until the end of February. This was about 8 months after the start of the job. Yes, 8 months to complete a job they told us would require 10 weeks. This company is a real amateur operation. I would give them a 0 star rating if it were available. If you are considering hiring Coastal Builders, I recommend that you hire another general contractor.
